Birth chart accuracy depends on how precise your birth time is, which ayanamsa the software uses, and whether you're looking at the main chart or a divisional chart, which moves faster than the main one for the same input error. The planetary positions themselves are the reliable part. Your inputs are where the wobble lives.
Two apps, same date of birth, same city, same clock time typed in twice. One says your ascendant is late Virgo. The other says early Libra. Somewhere in this picture is a mistake, or so it feels, except that's usually not what happened.
A birth chart's accuracy has a ceiling, and the ceiling is set by what you feed the software, not by the software's arithmetic. Ephemeris data, the tables that record where each planet actually sat in the sky on a given date, is not the fragile part. The fragile part is your recorded birth time, the ayanamsa your app has chosen, and whether you're reading the main chart or a slice of it.
Is the maths the weak link?
Not really, and it's worth ruling this out first. Modern ephemeris software calculates planetary positions from orbital models refined over centuries of observation. Vedikks runs on the Swiss Ephemeris's Moshier method, accurate to roughly one arcsecond, which is a sliver too small for any reading a human does off a chart. If a chart looks off, the sky-position calculation is close to the last place to look.
Birth time: the fastest mover
The ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, moves roughly one degree every four minutes, per Astrodienst's own birth-time guidance, and fifteen minutes of error is already enough to change the interpretation in their words. The arithmetic behind that holds up on its own: the whole zodiac takes about 24 hours to circle the horizon, so a sign takes on average two hours to rise. A birth time rounded from 6:52 to "around 7" is not a cosmetic rounding. Near a sign boundary, it's the difference between two lagnas, two sets of twelve houses, and two readings of the same life pulling from different starting points.

Ayanamsa, the setting nobody asks about
Vedic astrology measures the zodiac against the fixed stars rather than the seasons, and that requires an ayanamsa: the offset between the sidereal zero point and the tropical one. Lahiri is the ayanamsa most Indian software defaults to, Vedikks included, and it is also the one behind India's own Rashtriya Panchang. Raman sits about 1.45 degrees away from Lahiri. The KP variants sit much closer, within roughly 22 arcminutes.
That gap sounds small until a planet happens to be parked near a sign boundary, where a 1.45 degree shift can push it into the next sign entirely, taking a house lord, a yoga or a dasha lord along with it. Two astrologers can both be doing correct arithmetic and still hand you two different charts, because they quietly picked two different ayanamsas and neither one mentioned it.
Divisional charts turn small errors into bigger ones
Whatever wobble already exists in your birth time or ayanamsa gets worse, not better, once you move into a divisional chart. Take the navamsa, the D9 used for marriage and general strength readings: each sign is cut into nine arcs of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and the navamsa ascendant shifts roughly every 13 minutes of birth time, several times faster than the main ascendant does. What stays solid even with a rough birth time
None of this makes an approximate-time chart worthless. The slower planets sit in one sign for months or years and don't notice a 20-minute rounding error. The Sun is usually stable unless the birth landed right on a sign-change day. Broad dasha chapters tend to survive small time errors too, even if the exact start and end dates inside a chapter shouldn't be trusted down to the day. What loses reliability fastest is the exact ascendant degree, the house cusps sitting on it, divisional lagnas, and anything that needs the Moon's position to the arcminute.
So, how accurate is your chart, really?
As accurate as its weakest input, which is almost never the planetary positions themselves. Before trusting anything a chart tells you, track down the most precise birth time record available. Ask whatever app or astrologer you're using which ayanamsa they run, since not everyone volunteers that. And hold divisional-chart claims to a higher bar than main-chart ones, because they are the part most likely to have moved.
Two apps disagreeing doesn't automatically mean one of them is broken. It usually means the two calculations started from different assumptions about ayanamsa or birth-time precision, and only one side bothered to say which.
