7th house astrology: what it says about partners

Most people meet their 7th house through a matchmaking spreadsheet, which is a rough introduction. It gets called the marriage box, somebody checks whether it is afflicted, and the conversation ends with a quote for a gemstone.

The 7th house in Vedic astrology is the house of partnership: marriage and long-term commitment, business partners, contracts, open opposition and your dealings with the public. Its classical name is Kalatra Bhava, the house of the spouse.

The older names widen the picture usefully. Yuvati Bhava reads as the house of the partner. Jaya Bhava carries a sense of what gets won or negotiated. Vaanijya Bhava is commerce, plainly. One house, all of that.

What is the 7th house in Vedic astrology?

It is the seventh sign counted from your rising sign, sitting directly opposite the 1st house. It governs marriage, business partnership, contracts, open enemies and public dealings. Venus is its natural significator, and it is one of the four kendra houses.

Kendra means angular. The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are the load-bearing houses of a chart, which is why a planet sitting in your 7th tends to show up in your life loudly rather than quietly. The 7th house handles more than marriage

Same house, several jobs. Marriage is the headline, but the 7th also covers business partners, legal contracts, negotiation, foreign residence and open enemies. What links them is that each one needs another person who is not you and who has their own agenda.

That last item surprises people. Open enemies live here because someone who opposes you directly is in a relationship with you, in the technical sense. The 12th house handles what stays hidden from you. The 7th handles whoever is sitting across the table.

So a well-supported 7th can read as a good head for deals, and a stressed one can read as a pattern of agreements you should never have signed. Same machinery, different department.

Your 7th house sits opposite your lagna

The 7th is exactly six signs from the 1st, so it always describes qualities your rising sign does not carry on its own. Whatever your lagna is built to do by itself, the 7th is built to do with somebody else.

Aries rising gets Libra on the 7th, so the sign that starts things alone keeps finding itself in negotiations. Cancer rising gets Capricorn, so a private, protective lagna partners with structure and a certain amount of distance. Read the 7th as your blind spot showing up as a person.

This is also why the house tends to attract what you have not developed yet. Not romance, exactly. Closer to an outsourcing arrangement you never consciously agreed to.

What the 7th lord actually changes

Your 7th lord is the planet ruling the sign on your 7th house, and its condition matters more than whether the house has planets in it. Where that planet sits, what aspects it, and how comfortable it is by sign together describe the texture of your partnerships.

An empty 7th house is not a bad sign. Most 7th houses are empty, since nine planets have twelve houses to spread across, and the 7th lord's placement carries the reading either way.

Darakaraka, the other spouse indicator

Darakaraka comes from Jaimini astrology rather than the house system. You note how far each planet has travelled through its current sign, and the one sitting at the lowest degree becomes your Darakaraka, the significator of the spouse.

There is a real disagreement about which planets go into that calculation. Parashara describes both a seven-planet scheme running Sun through Saturn and an eight-planet scheme that adds Rahu using a reversed degree, since Rahu always moves backwards. Sanjay Rath's lineage argues for eight in human charts. Plenty of working astrologers use seven. Ketu is left out either way.

If your app gives you a different Darakaraka than your friend's app, that split is usually the reason rather than a bug. Run both and see which one matches what has actually happened in your life.

Is the 7th house really a maraka house?

Technically yes, and it means considerably less than it sounds. Classical texts label the 2nd and 7th as maraka sthanas because they sit twelfth from the 3rd and the 8th, the two houses tied to longevity. The label attaches to the lords of those houses.

You can see how that gets abused. A house that governs marriage and also carries the word maraka is an easy thing to frighten somebody with, particularly when there is a remedy for sale at the end of the sentence.

The honest reading is narrower. Maraka is a technical assignment inside a longevity calculation that needs the whole chart, the dasha sequence and a careful astrologer to mean anything at all. It is not a verdict on your marriage, and any reading that jumps straight from your 7th lord to a warning about your partner's health has skipped several steps on purpose.

Whose 7th house is busy in late 2026?

That depends entirely on your rising sign, because transits land in houses counted from your lagna. Two slow planets are worth watching this year, and each is currently sitting in some readers' 7th house while being nowhere near other readers' 7th at all.

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer until 31 October 2026, when it moves into Leo at roughly 7:19 PM IST. Cancer is the seventh sign from Capricorn, so Capricorn ascendants have had an exalted Jupiter crossing their partnership house since 2 June. Our Jupiter in Cancer post covers that transit properly.

Saturn is retrograde in Pisces from 27 July to 11 December 2026, a stretch of 138 days, and it does not leave Pisces while retrograde. A transit through the 7th does not schedule a wedding or a breakup. It changes which questions get loud. Whether anything comes of it depends on your dasha, which runs on a separate clock, and dashas versus transits explains why the two so often disagree.

What the 7th house cannot tell you

It cannot name a person, hand you a date, decide whether a relationship is permitted, or tell you how somebody will treat you. A chart describes patterns and pressures. What you do about them stays with you.

The use I would push back on hardest is treating a 7th house reading as a reason to stay somewhere that is hurting you, or to reject a person before you have properly met them. A chart is not consent, and it is not a compatibility certificate either.
