A tithi is a lunar day, and it almost never matches a 24-hour solar day exactly. So panchangs need a rule to decide which civil date owns a festival: most tithis go by sunrise (udaya tithi), Ganesh Chaturthi goes by midday (madhyahna vyapti), and a few, like Sankashti Chaturthi, go by moonrise instead. None of these rules is wrong, they are answering different questions, which is why the same festival can print two dates depending on which panchang, city and tradition you are reading.
Tithi and date are not the same measurement, and almost every argument about a Hindu festival's real date traces back to that gap. A tithi is a lunar day while a date is a solar day, and the two drift against each other constantly. Panchang-makers have had rules for centuries to decide which civil day keeps a tithi when the two disagree, and those rules are the actual answer to why your calendar and your cousin's sometimes don't match.

What is a tithi, exactly?
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to move twelve degrees away from the Sun, and there are thirty of them in a lunar month. That one sentence is worth remembering, because everything else here follows from it.
The Moon's speed is not constant, so a tithi is not a fixed length either. It can run anywhere from a little under twenty hours to nearly twenty-seven, while a civil day, measured sunrise to sunrise, stays close to twenty-four. Stack that mismatch across a month and the two calendars are guaranteed to fall out of step. The average works out to about 23 hours and 37 minutes, close enough to a day that the drift is easy to miss until a festival lands on it.
Why a tithi can miss a sunrise, or catch two of them
The mismatch shows up in two ways. A short tithi can begin after one sunrise and finish before the next, so no sunrise ever falls inside it. Panchangs call that kshaya, and the tithi effectively gets skipped for calendar purposes even though the Moon still passed through it.
A long tithi can do the opposite: start before one sunrise and run past the next one too, so it gets counted on both civil days. That is vriddhi, and it is why some years hand you an eight-day Navratri and others a ten-day one. Neither is an error. It is what happens when tithis of uneven length meet a day of fixed length, month after month.
The sunrise rule most tithis use
Most Hindu vrats and tithi-based festivals use udaya tithi, the tithi running at sunrise, to decide the civil date. Whatever tithi owns that one moment owns the whole day, no matter when it actually ends.
This is the rule behind Ekadashi, which is why Aja Ekadashi 2026 is observed on 7 September even though the tithi itself expires mid-afternoon. Sunrise is a clean, unambiguous instant, which is probably why it became the default: every location gets exactly one per day, and nobody has to argue about which part of the day counts as the real one.
Sunrise itself is local, though, and that alone can split a festival's date between two cities, as this year's Hartalika Teej shows further down.
The midday rule Ganesh Chaturthi uses instead
Not every festival wants the sunrise answer. Ganesh Chaturthi is fixed by madhyahna vyapti, the midday-pervading rule, because tradition places Ganesha's appearance around midday and builds the puja around that hour rather than around dawn.
The mechanics are more precise than "around noon" suggests. Panchang-makers split the daylight between sunrise and sunset into five equal parts, and the middle fifth is madhyahna. Whichever civil day has Chaturthi tithi present during that specific window is the day Ganesh Chaturthi falls on, even if a different tithi was running at sunrise.
That is also why the exact clock time of madhyahna moves by city and season. It is a fraction of daylight, not a number on a clock, so it shifts earlier in winter and later in summer.
Moonrise and evening: the other reference points
Sunrise and midday are not the only anchors panchangs use. Sankashti Chaturthi is decided by moonrise instead, which is why our Sankashti Chaturthi guide can have two Indian cities keeping the same monthly vrat a day apart. Some evening pujas lean on pradosh kaal, the twilight window after sunset, for the same underlying reason: the ritual has a traditional hour, and the calendar rule follows the ritual.
Once you know to look for it, the pattern repeats everywhere. Find the moment a festival's ritual actually happens, and you usually find the rule its date is built on.
So why is Hartalika Teej split this year?
Because the tithi boundary lands close enough to sunrise that different reference points genuinely disagree. Drik Panchang has this year's Tritiya running from 7:08 AM on 13 September to 7:06 AM on 14 September for New Delhi.
At sunrise in Delhi on the 14th, Tritiya is still running, so the udaya-tithi rule prints Monday 14 September, which is the date most Indian panchangs give for most of the country. A smaller number of calendars print the 13th, because Hartalika puja is traditionally an evening observance, and an evening-based reference point can catch Tritiya a day earlier than the sunrise rule does. Neither side has the date wrong. So which date is actually correct?
Usually both, depending on what you are asking. "Which tithi is running right now" has one precise, computable answer. "Which civil date should I observe this festival on" depends on which reference point your family, region or panchang uses, and every reference point in this article is a legitimate, traditional answer.
