Astrology dating compatibility: the filter and the chart

The sign question stopped being a joke somewhere around 2019, which is when Bumble added Zodiac Badges and let people filter by them. By May 2022 the company said 78 percent of its active members in the US had put one on their profile. Tinder went considerably further this March, launching an Astrology Mode that asks for your birth time and birth city and then scores you against other people who have switched it on.

Astrology dating compatibility is the practice of comparing two people's charts to describe how they are likely to relate to each other. That description covers everything from a one-variable sun sign filter to a full Vedic kundli comparison, and the distance between those two things is most of what this piece is about. Worth saying up front that I think the filters are mostly harmless and mostly useless, and that the interesting version of this is not on any dating app yet.

What the dating apps actually check

Almost all of them check one variable, your sun sign, and a couple now check three. Nothing on a mainstream dating app currently compares two full charts to each other, which is the thing the word compatibility normally means in astrology.

Bumble's version is the oldest and the simplest. A Zodiac Badge goes on your profile, and the Zodiac Filter lets you screen out signs you have decided against. Tinder's Astrology Mode, announced at its product keynote on 12 March 2026, is the more ambitious build: it collects birth time and location, displays your Sun, Moon and Rising, then shows a per-match breakdown with a Cosmic Spark score out of five and an Elements Mix percentage. Tinder's own early testing reported close to a 20 percent lift in Likes sent by women on astrology-enabled profiles, which is a company engagement figure rather than an independent one, and is a claim about swiping rather than about relationships.

A smaller tier of apps did try the full-chart version. Struck built its matching with the astrologer Nadine Jane and compares aspects across whole charts, including the lunar nodes and Chiron. NUiT scored on birth charts rather than signs and has since announced it is winding the dating product down. So the deeper approach has been attempted, and it has not been what scaled.

Why the sun sign is the weakest thing on your profile

Two reasons, and the second one is the awkward one. A sun sign covers roughly a twelfth of everybody alive, so as a filter it removes about eight percent of the pool while telling you almost nothing specific about the person you removed.

The awkward reason is that the sign on your badge may not be your sign. Dating apps use the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars, and the two have drifted about 24 degrees apart over the centuries. For most birthdays that pushes the Vedic sun sign one full sign earlier, so someone who has spent years declaring themselves a Gemini and filtering accordingly is a Taurus in the system that guna milan runs on. Filtering on a placement that two traditions cannot agree about, using a rule you did not choose, is a strange way to decide who to talk to.

What a Vedic comparison reads instead

Vedic matching starts from the Moon. Ashtakoot milan, the 36-point system most people mean when they say kundli matching, scores eight kootas, and all eight are computed from the Moon's nakshatra and rashi. The Sun is not an input.

The weighting is lopsided on purpose. Nadi carries 8 points and Bhakoot carries 7, so those two alone are nearly half the total, while Varna carries 1. That is why two charts can look socially mismatched and still score high, or look perfect on paper and lose fifteen points to a single koota. Guna milan is also only the opening move. A proper comparison then looks at the 7th house and its lord in both charts, at Venus for how each person gives and receives affection, at Mars for temper and friction, at the navamsa for whether a strong promise in the main chart survives the ninth division, and at the running dashas for whether this is even a period in which either person is likely to settle. Does astrology dating compatibility actually work?

No controlled study has shown that chart matching predicts whether a relationship lasts, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. That is the honest headline, and it does not make the practice worthless.

What a comparison does well is describe pattern. It gives two people language for how each of them handles closeness, silence, conflict and reassurance, and it tends to get those questions on the table in week one instead of month eight. A Cosmic Spark score out of five will not do that. A conversation that starts with what your Moon actually needs might.

Verdict: a sun sign filter is a conversation starter wearing the costume of a compatibility engine. If you want the astrological read to mean anything, you need both charts and the timing, and if you want to know whether the relationship will work, you still need to date the person.

How much should any of it decide?

Less than it currently does for some people. A chart comparison describes tendencies, and tendencies are not fate, so a low guna score is a note about where two temperaments will need work rather than a reason to cancel a human being you have not met.

The failure mode worth naming is using the chart to settle something you already know the answer to. Running a match score for the fifth time on someone who is treating you badly, or looking for a placement that explains why you should stay, turns a reflective tool into a way of avoiding a decision. That is the same reassurance loop we wrote about in the astrology anxiety piece, and it shows up in relationships more than anywhere else. If checking is making you more anxious rather than clearer, the chart is not the thing to consult.

Use it the way you would use knowing someone is an early riser. Real information, genuinely useful, nowhere near sufficient.
