TL;DR

Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday 29 October in India, the day Kartik Krishna Chaturthi is running when the moon rises. In New Delhi the tithi runs 1:06 am to 10:09 pm, the puja window is 5:38 pm to 6:56 pm and the moon rises at 8:17 pm. Moonrise changes by city, so check yours, and soften the fast if your health asks for it.

Every year around now a group chat somewhere argues about whether Karwa Chauth is today or tomorrow, and which app to trust for the moonrise. The argument is usually about one rule, and once you know the rule the dates mostly sort themselves out.

Karwa Chauth is a one-day vrat on Krishna Chaturthi of Kartik in purnimanta calendars, observed by fasting from sunrise until the moon is seen and then breaking the fast after offering arghya to the moon. Women keep it most often, for a spouse or for their own reasons, and some men and unmarried women fast too.

When is Karwa Chauth 2026?

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday 29 October in India. Drik Panchang lists it for that date for New Delhi, and an independent Vedic calendar site agrees. Chaturthi is the fourth tithi of the waning Moon, and this one is Ashwin Krishna Chaturthi in amanta calendars, which is why South and West India do not call it Kartik. Our guide to purnimanta and amanta explains that naming gap.

Why does the date change from country to country?

The vrat belongs to the day on which Chaturthi is running when the moon rises where you live. A tithi begins and ends at one instant for the whole planet, but moonrise happens at different clock times in different places.

That is why North America keeps Karwa Chauth on Wednesday 28 October. Evenings there come many hours after India's, so Chaturthi is already running by the time the moon appears. The UK, the Gulf, Singapore and Australia land on 29 October like India does. If you are abroad, use a calendar set to your own city, and read our note on tithi versus date if the logic still feels slippery.

Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi also falls on 29 October this year, so some households will have a Ganesha fast running alongside. Our explainer on Sankashti Chaturthi covers how that one works.

What time is moonrise, and when does the fast end?

In New Delhi the moon rises at 8:17 pm on 29 October, and the Drik Panchang fasting window runs from 6:31 am to 8:17 pm. Your city will differ, sometimes by well over an hour.

Drik Panchang lists moonrise at 7:47 pm in Kolkata, 8:06 pm in Lucknow, 8:28 pm in Jaipur and 9:00 pm in Mumbai. The fast also starts at different times, from about 5:39 am in Kolkata to 6:44 am in Amritsar, because it follows local sunrise. A calendar's moonrise is a calculation for a flat horizon, and buildings, haze and clouds can push the real sighting later. Most families break the fast when they actually see the moon, which is the older practice anyway.

How does the fast work in practice?

The day starts before sunrise with sargi, a meal traditionally sent by the mother-in-law, then no food or water until moonrise. In the evening the family gathers for the puja and a reading of the katha. Arghya is then offered to the moon, and the fast is broken, often with water and a sweet from a spouse or elder.

Customs vary a lot. Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi each have their own sargi foods and their own katha versions. The puja muhurat of 5:38 pm to 6:56 pm is for New Delhi, and each city's window follows its own evening. If your family does it differently from a website, your family's way is the real one.

Who should skip or soften the fast?

Anyone for whom a dry fast is risky should soften it or skip it, and that includes anyone who is pregnant, has diabetes or low blood pressure, or takes regular medication. A long day without water can cause dizziness, and a drop in blood sugar can be dangerous. Ask your doctor, since this is a health question and not an astrology one.

Taking water, juice or fruit is a very common compromise, and plenty of devout families make it. Nothing in the tradition asks you to prove devotion through suffering. If the idea of the fast brings pressure from relatives, it is fine to keep a gentler version or none at all. If fasting stirs up anxiety about food or your body, talk to a doctor or a counsellor, because astrology is not a treatment for any of that.

Does your birth chart say anything about Karwa Chauth?

Not in any testable way. The vrat is a tradition tied to a tithi, and a chart does not decide whether you should keep it. Astrology cannot show that a fast lengthens a partner's life, and anyone selling that promise is selling fear.

What a chart can show is the broader picture of partnership, which the seventh house describes. If you want to think about your relationship with a calmer head than a ritual calendar allows, our piece on the seventh house and partnerships is a better place to start than any rule about what to eat on Thursday.

Quick answers

When is Karwa Chauth 2026?

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday 29 October in India. In New Delhi, Drik Panchang lists Chaturthi from 1:06 am to 10:09 pm IST on that day, puja between 5:38 pm and 6:56 pm, and moonrise at 8:17 pm. North America keeps it a day earlier, on Wednesday 28 October, because the moon rises there while Chaturthi is already running.

Why does Karwa Chauth fall on different dates in different countries?

The vrat belongs to the day on which Chaturthi is running when the moon rises where you live. A tithi starts and ends at one instant worldwide, but moonrise happens at different clock times in different places, so the same tithi can cover a Wednesday moonrise in the US and a Thursday moonrise in India.

Can I drink water or take medicine during the Karwa Chauth fast?

The traditional fast allows no food or water from sunrise until the moon is seen. Many people follow a softer version with water, juice or fruit, and that is a common household choice. If you take regular medication, are pregnant, have diabetes or low blood pressure, ask your doctor before fasting. Nothing in the vrat requires you to risk your health.
